Keeping Your Cool at Home

Here are some great ideas for staying cool in your home for the summer.

Barbecue

Cook outside as much as possible since using your oven and stovetop heats up your kitchen and the rest of your house. To enjoy every meal outdoors, get a barbecue with a side burner for boiling noodles or frying eggs.

Air Conditioners and Timers

Get an air conditioner with an Energy Star rating. They are far more energy efficient and will save you money on your electrical bill, decrease the need for fossil fuels- it’s all good! Programmable thermostats control the temperature according to your schedule- set it to start just before you get home instead of running it all day.

Umbrellas and Awnings

These provide shade to keep you cool- a rollout window awning can cool the temperature outside windows and doors, and also prevent sunlight and heat from entering your home.

Trees

Trees and shrubs absorb heat, provide more shade and release moisture. Plant on the south and southwest sides of your home for best results.

Windows and Doors

The cool air you’re paying for often makes its way directly outside. Increase the barrier between the indoor and outdoor air by replacing windows and doors with Energy Star models. They can cut your cooling costs by as much as 38%!

Insulation

Keep cooler by adding insulation. Adding insulation can lower energy bills by 25% or more.

Blinds and Drapes

Simple and effective- make sure that your blinds and drapes are closed during peak sun times. White drapes or shades will keep your house cooler since brighter colours reflect light. Bamboo blinds are an excellent choice since they are eco friendly too- bamboo is a renewable resource.

Ceiling Fans

Energy Star rated ceiling fans can make a room feel 7 degrees cooler and reduce the need for running air conditioning. They don’t actually cool a room, they cool people by circulating the air and creating a breeze. So, turn them off when you’re not around.

Feel good about keeping cool this summer with eco-friendly, energy conserving ideas to use at home.
