Another year of CADS has begun, and it’s looking great! Tracey is a volunteer instructor with CADS at Snow Valley Barrie for the past 8 years, I have volunteered as an instructor too. Here is Tracey with his new student for 2010.

Mad River lookout
Thursday, November 26th, 2009

The Mad River iron bridge in Clearview is within walking distance of our farm. There is now a very nice entry to a platform where you can view the river and surrounding protected area. Makes for a good destination on a Sunday afternoon hike.
No Money for Groceries
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
You don’t have to go further than your local grocery store to find people who are going through a difficult time right now. Tracey and I were in picking up a few things and we ended up in the check out behind a young couple and their toddler. After a moment, we realized that all of their methods of payment were being declined. They were obviously very distressed- and I was thinking: didn’t they know before they came in that their cards would be declined? Maybe they hoped the credit card would be approved? Tracey whispered to me that he would like to cover their bill, was that ok? We agreed, Tracey paid and we offered them our phone number so that they could contact us if they could pay us back…they did call us back later in the evening with thanks and asking for our mailing address to send us a cheque.
Household Tips for Saving Money
Thursday, March 5th, 2009
We have been meeting quite a few homeowners who are
having trouble ‘making ends meet’. People everywhere are
coming up with great ideas on how to save money. Just
‘Googling’ this topic results in tons of creative and easy
solutions to pinching pennies these days. Here are a few
that I thought would be a good place to start for our
household:
1. Shop around for cheaper car and house insurance.
2. Save energy at home (again, loads of tips online for this
one!)
3. Do you really need a cell phone?
4. Do you really need your landline?
5. Cancel TV packages- cable or satellite- or at least switch
to a cheaper package.
6. Cancel memberships that you don’t use or have lost an
interest in.
7. Cancel your newspaper and magazine subscriptions.
The library has a huge selection of magazines.
8. Cancel your gym membership- exercise for free at home
and in the outdoors.
9. Don’t buy books -use the library.
10. Postpone anything that can wait: renos., trips…whatever.
11. Buy groceries at a cheaper supermarket.
There are so many things that can be done to save money
at home. I try to have fun and be creative with ideas.
Our family has saved a lot of money by cancelling our usual
weekly dinner & a movie night and either playing cards or
renting a movie and making a special dinner at home. It
was a genius move as we have actually been having a great
time at it!
Volunteering for the Canadian Association of Diabled Skiers
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
Every Sunday in the winter time, you’ll find us at Snow Valley. We are there as volunteer ski instructors for people living with a disability who want an opportunity to hit the slopes and enjoy some winter fun. This photo shows Tracey, Dayton, Rob and Morley out with one of the top sit skiers in the program. It is a busy schedule every weekend with many participants of all ages from all over central and southern Ontario.
