Renovations- Always a Trying Time!

castle-cottage

I think this is a gorgeous photo of Beatrix Potter’s Castle Cottage.  Love the gardens!

In reading some of her letters (I am a fan of hers) I came across a mention of the time when she and her husband William Heelis were renovating Castle Cottage in December 1913:

“I am hoping to get settled in the Castle Cottage soon- it has been such an awful mess.  The new rooms are nothing like built yet, & the old part has been all upset with breaking doors in the wall & taking out partitions

Those front rooms, where you & Augusta slept are one long room now & the staircase is altered, & we are going to have a bathroom- in the course of time- I think workmen are very slow.”

I guess some things never change!

sold-sold-sold

National resale housing market activity continued climbing in July 2009, with sales posting the largest year-over-year gain in two years. It was also the first time on record that sales activity topped 50,000 units for the month of July in any year on record.

According to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association, a total of 50,270 homes traded hands via the Multiple Listing Service® of Canadian real estate boards in July 2009. This is up 18.2 per cent from the same month last year, and stands 3.9 per cent above the previous record for the month of July set back in 2007

Beans and Baby Beets

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

beans-and-beetsMmmm!  Fresh from our family garden today…great idea for serving the beets: olive oil, rosemary and fresh garlic cooked together (roasted with the beets is best, but you can cook the garlic, rosemary in olive oil in a pan then toss with the beets).  Smells divine, tastes delicious!

Antique Glass Canning Jars

antique-jarsA surprise gift from a very special client.  This lady gave me a boxful of beautiful old canning jars.  We helped her and her husband sell their family hobby farm and she wanted to give them to me because we once compared notes on making jams and pickles :) .   I washed them up- some have a wonderful blue or green tint.  Looked up these types of jars on the Internet and they appear to be from the early 1900’s.  They are Gem and Crown jars.

Found a great source of information on bottles and jars  www.theouthouse.ca

Baby Great Blue Heron!

baby-great-blue-heron

This was an amazing thing- a baby great blue heron right in our backyard!  We have never had any of these birds come close to the house before.  It was walking along picking up little frogs in the grass during an overcast, rainy holiday Monday.  This year is a banner year for frogs.  There are hundreds of them everywhere- we have walking paths all through the farm and you have to be careful in many areas because the path is loaded with them.  Same problem when mowing.  The parents are nesting in a tall tree at the north ravine this year-
